Topic 6: Finding Meaning in Serving

Psychologists tell us that two of the essential sources of energy for people are the need to find meaning and to be engaged in solid relationships. These two experiences go hand-in-hand in healthy, happy people who make a positive difference in the world.

As people of faith, Catholics believe that through Baptism all of us are called to share in the mission of Jesus. Each one of us is part of the important task of continuing the mission and message of God’s own Son, Jesus.

Reflecting on this can cause us great joy as we realize the honor that God gives us in offering us the privilege of carrying on what Jesus began. This might also cause us to panic when we look at the enormity of the task. We know, however, that no one person is called to do everything or to fulfill every request that comes along. Rather, our Church is the community of all who together continue this work.

Considered from both the psychological and religious perspective, then, what we are about is finding a way to meaningfully give of ourselves that is generous, appropriate, and helpful to others who are part of the world of our experience.

The Church calls this faith-filled taking of our best gifts and talents and offering them for the good of others ministry. Scripture reminds us that "There are many gifts, but the same Spirit." From the beginning, those who follow Jesus have been invited to take a look within themselves, discover their blessings and bring them forth for the benefit of others. It is in using these gifts that we develop, expand, and allow them to blossom. In God’s way, one person’s gift enriches many.

The task before each and every Baptized person, whether married, single, or in religious commitments, is to get involved in what needs to be done so that the mission and message of Jesus live in our time, in all places, and among all people.

Where do we begin? Simply look around, ask what needs to be done and how you can help. You many find that the opportunity, the challenge to be like Jesus is right there in front of you.
