COLLEGE STUDENT SURVEY RESULTS

and the Joliet Diocese Vocation Office
Results through May 28, 2005

2200 college students have completed this survey as of May 28, 2005. It should be noted that this is not a scientific survey of a random sampling of respondents. It does however provide interesting information for those who work in the field of vocations as well as for those who are considering the possibility of priesthood or religious life.

The survey also includes two open-ended questions. Listed here are some of the more current responses to the question,
"What do you think are the three most important qualities needed in future priests, sisters, and brothers?"

  4. A sensitive understanding of the human condition, an overflowing of love for all people, and a desire to strengthen the bond between themselves and God.

  13. I think three qualities of importance are compassion, humility and deep, honest prayerfulness; sincere and humble personal holiness that reaches out in an overflow of compassion to the very real Christ who lives, starkly evident, in our neighbor.

  14. They should have a very good relationship to the Trinity and to Mary, they should pray a lot and always seek God's support and help and they should really live their faith with joy!

  153. Obviously faith. Without it what would be the point. Courage. Priests have to be a lot like soldiers. There are times when you have to apply your will to exercise discipline in the face of truly overwhelming circumstances to achieve an objective. I think it also falls upon a priest to inspire courage in others. Discipline. I mentioned discipline while expounding on the virtue of courage. My understanding is that, sacramentally, the priest is called to stand in to/for the person of Christ. It therefore follows that one must pursue the practice of discipline to keep in check one's own less than perfect nature while at the same time striving to reach the Christ-like ideal.

  154. Orthodox teachers, the quality of the tree can be tested by observing the fruits which it produces.

  155. Spirituality, that is a very close relationship with GOD. Pride, meaning, a priest, sister etc. should be proud that he/she is part of God's 'squad' hence should not be ashamed about it, never! Sincerity with the faithful.

  161. Well, it depends on what sort of vocation the person is called to, a contemplative would probably bring different qualities than a military chaplain, but: active personal prayer life, desire to continue to learn with an open mind, obedience to the Church.
