Meet Brother Benedict, OSB
Brother Benedict Alva, 24, will profess solemn
vows this November as a Benedictine of St. Procopius Abbey. Born
in Mangalore, India, he came as a toddler to the States and
eventually attended Benet Academy and Benedictine University.
"I noticed the monks," Brother Benedict recalls.
"I watched them. They were friendly, always around, and easy
to talk to. Then, when I was in Nebraska doing medical research
one summer, I thought a lot about what was important in life.
"So, when I got back, I decided it was time to ask some
nitty-gritty questions. I knew one of the monks living on campus,
so I stopped in to talk. I figured I'd get some good advice --
and I did!
"I well remember the
evening I told my parents of my plans. They were and are
supportive of my decision. They know that I was influenced by the
many priests and religious we have in our family.
"I''m still uncovering the joys of Benedictine life,
which I thoroughly love. It's great fun to share stories about
things we like (for me, that's hunting and ice-fishing!) and to
have a good laugh. But I also respect and need the cloister's
peaceful silence and prayerfulness.
"Some things those reading this should know are: Monks
are not biological or historical specimens! They're real people!
Real people learning from a wisdom that has something to teach us
all. So don't be shy! Share with others the gifts God gave
you."
As well as working at Benet Academy, Brother Benedict has
chores here at the Abbey, as shown. He hopes to begin graduate
work in theology next Autumn.
